Today Under release their new album called Stop Being Naive. Time for DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen to ask Under’s bass player/vocalist Matt Franklin some questions!
Hey, how are you?
Matt Franklin: I’m well thanks, just tightening up some vocal parts for a studio session this weekend.
Can you tell us something about the history of Under?
Mayo (guitar and vocals), Andy (drums and vocals) and I have played together in various incarnations for years. Under has been around for about 4 years now and is the result of us wanting to have a more focused aesthetic while still giving ourselves the freedom to do pretty much what we want with our mutual love of heavy and unusual music.
For people not knowing you (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?
“Uneasy Listening” was a term coined by a friend of ours. It seems pretty perfect to us! We’re noisy, heavy and weird – you probably won’t party to our music.
What makes Under unique?
If we are unique I think it is because of our opinion of what “heavy” means. For us it is about a vibe or an emotion like anger or disgust rather than stylistic choices like “chugging” guitar riffs or cookie-monster vocals. A lot of metal sounds funny more than it does angry to our ears.
Any future plans you can already tell us something about?
We have some excellent UK shows coming up to promote our new album such as shows with Whores, Boss Keloid and Kurokuma. There’s also the release itself, we’re very proud of this album and can’t wait for people to hear it.
Any upcoming gigs for Under? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?
We would absolutely love to come to the Netherlands! If anybody reading this wants to book 3 English weirdos to upset everyone at their show then hit us up!
How do you think your life would be without music?
Everyone says this and its probably a little dramatic but I don’t think I’d still be here if it wasn’t for music. It’s something to express myself through, it keeps me busy and when we produce something we’re truly proud of like this new album it’s the best feeling there is.
What advice would you give to young and starting bands?
Be yourselves and work hard. Anyone can copy a formula, imitate somebody else. People respond to things that are genuine and emotional so as long as you are willing to accept that you won’t be for everyone and just keep doing what you do people will catch on.
Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?
Thanks for having us, check out our new album and most importantly – STOP BEING NAÏVE!
I’m Tim van Velthuysen and I started DutchMetalManiac back in 2014. I’m 27 years old and I live in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Of course, I like metal, but I can also appreciate other musical styles. However, metal is what I mostly listen to. I also like going to concerts, meeting with friends and watching movies (especially arthouse).
