Review: Lacrimas Profundere – Bleeding the Stars

The German band Lacrimas Profundere already exists for 26 years. Of their current line-up only the brothers Schmid already were Lacrimas Profundere members back then. Founder Oliver Nikolas Schmid is still playing the guitar in Lacrimas Profundere, while former vocalist Christopher Schmid is only active on the background since 2007 with songwriting. The thing that I reminded the most of the older Lacrimas Profundere material, that from before 2007, are Christopher’s very special, dark and low vocals. Since Christopher stepped back from Lacrimas Profundere’s vocal spot in 2007, Rob Vitacca became their new vocalist. I didn’t listen to Lacrimas Profundere anymore for quite a while until a month ago. That also was my first acquaintance with Rob’s vocals. I also liked his vocals, but I thought they weren’t as special as Christopher’s. Last year Lacrimas Profundere and Rob Vitacca parted ways and so it was, again, time for a new vocalist. This new vocalist was found in Julian Larre. Drummer Dominik Scholz, who was Lacrimas Profundere’s drummer between 2010 and 2013 and who is back since 2018, complements this line-up. With this current line-up Lacrimas Profundere recently released their new album Bleeding the Stars.

Bleeding the Stars‘ opening track I Knew and Will Forever Know starts with a heavy guitar riff, which gets atmospheric vibes a few moments later. A few moments after this opening track starts something becomes very clear: vocalist Julian is a fantastic pick. His low and dark vocals will immediately bring you back to Lacrimas Profundere’s period when Christopher was doing the vocals. The moment you think that Julian probably is already singing at the lowest point of his vocal range, he even starts singing a bit lower. To give you an example, be sure to listen to Celestite Woman and Mother of Doom. Besides that he also delivers quite a bit of variation in his vocals. As already mentioned he sometimes sings a bit lower, on other moments he is singing a bit higher. He also delivers some shouty vocals such as in The Kingdom Solicitude, some nice growls in for example Father of Fate and he even screams a little bit in Like Screams in Empty Halls. At some moments some a bit different sounding backing vocals are added to his lead vocals, which creates a very nice effect, such as in the opening track.

On Bleeding the Stars there isn’t only variation vocally but also musically. A few examples are the nicely added symphonic aspects in The Kingdom Solicitude, Mother of Doom and A Sip of Multiverse, the also very fitting added electronical sounds in Father of Fate, giving this track a more modern sound. Other examples are Like Screams in Empty Halls which includes more mechanically sounding and epic elements and the added piano in After All Those Infinities. All this is of course based on Dominik’s strong drums, as can be heard in a very nice way in for example Father of Fate and A Sleeping Throne, and the guitars done by Oliver Nikolas, who also shows a nice solo in A Sip of Multiverse.

All this, but especially Julian’s vocals, are contributing to the very nice and dark atmosphere Lacrimas Profundere creates on Bleeding the Stars. For the main part of this album they have found a perfect balance between heavy, atmospheric and catchy. The majority of Bleeding the Stars became a very strong album with quite some variation between its tracks. Tracks that almost all are, piece by piece, very strong. In my opinion four tracks are a bit less strong, but still very good, only not as much as the other tracks. Those tracks are Celestite Woman, The Reaper, After All Those Infinities and A Sip of Multiverse. That’s the reason why in my opinion Bleeding the Stars only is a very strong album instead of a phenomenal album. That of course isn’t making a difference in Bleeding the Stars surely being highly recommended!
