Interview: Hereza

In February, Croatian death metallers Hereza released their new album I Become Death. DutchMetalManiac’s Don Anelli already reviewed it here and he also interviewed Hereza’s Slobodan Stupar. Read it below.

Well, first off, let’s talk about the new album. Are you pleased with its reaction so far?

Yes we are pleased with reactions on our album. We knew it was good, but reactions are beyond what we expected to be so we are even more happy about it.

Do you have a favorite track off the album? What makes it special for you?

For me personally, Jebem vas u usta ‘ladna song is my favorite. It is raw, aggressive, fast, brutal, dark… And the lyrics are the most evil and dark I ever wrote so I am very proud of it.

This was recorded at homemade studio Brvnara. Why did you decide it was right to record there?

Because we couldn’t afford to go to a real studio. We wanted to record a demo so we can hear how it sounds all together but it came out pretty good so we decided to make an album instead of just a demo.
Why we recorded it there? Because it is my room. Hehe 🙂

Why did you decide to work with producer Denis Sloboda? Did he bring out anything special to the material while you were recording?

He is our good friend who started with sound engineering. He wanted to practice and we wanted to record our songs. He did the recording, but our good, old friend Mario did the mixing and mastering.

How would you describe your sound for those who are unfamiliar with you guys?

Pure, raw Swedish death fucking metal with influences of punk.

What are your biggest influences in the genre to play this kind of music?

There are a lot of bands we like and look up to but here are the few: Wolfbrigade, Entombed, Dismember, Demonical, Victims, Disfear…

Was it difficult to initially get the band started within your hometown being that Croatia isn’t well-known in the death metal community?

When we started as kids, it wasn’t so hard because there were a lot of kids and people who were into this kind of music. Nowadays, sadly there are less and less kids who are interested in listening and playing punk/rock/metal music so it is pretty hard to find people to play with. That is why we are just a duo.

Being a two-piece band at the moment, do you find it easier to compose music together or is there a lot more struggle to get music composed?

We have no struggles with making music. I make all the music and write some lyrics, and Ivan writes the lyrics.

What plans do you have to promote the album as far as tours or videos?

At the moment, tours unfortunately no because we are just a duo, and also I think we won’t make any new videos. It’s hard to get together now since we both moved out from Croatia. I moved to Germany and Ivan moved to Ireland. Both in search for better life and opportunities.

So, we’ll end this on a fun note. What’s your all-time favorite track that you wish you wanted to write?

Hehe that’s a good question. Without a doubt, Slayer’s Angel of Death. That song, for me is just a pure perfection. Music, lyrics, everything.

Do you wish to say something to our readers?

Keep fucking support metal! And drink beer! 🙂
