Not long ago a new band called Helldrifter was formed in Germany. Recently DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Helldrifter’s vocalist Billy Kollins. We’ll also are proud to give you the exclusive premiere of Helldrifter’s very first single, Die Another Day.
Hey, how are you?
I’m fine thank you, Christmas is coming you know, people are going crazy in the stores. Shopping spree and all these things are happening.
Helldrifter is a very new band, how did you guys met and what made you decide to start Helldrifter?
Well since I left my old band Bulletrail, I still had the feeling that I wanna do metal again, and this time I wanted to do it right. So I started by searching in online adverts for some people to create a new band. After something like a year, we’ve got a good lineup. I’m really proud of my band, they are great people and very dedicated to this whole thing.
What’s the story behind your bandname?
We love the video game Doom. And I wanted something that goes on many ‘’lines’’, you know literally a name that can go from demonic/hellish topics to more complex life situations.
You haven’t released any music yet, but you will be playing death metal. Can you tell us a bit more specifically what we can expect?
Well.. I have something for you, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. I can only tell you that there is something that sounds like drinking a cocktail on the beach while listening to Slayer!
What are the themes your lyrical content will be about?
That’s a great question, well it goes from horror movies, hellish video games, war, death and sometimes about challenging life situations.
You’re now in the studio for recording your debut album, which will be released in early 2020. How is the recording process going?
Oh man, it’s going really well. Our drummer finished his part in like 2 days. 10 songs, now we are at guitar recording and I can tell you that this thing will sound amazing!
Now you are already going to release a single, which isn’t part of the debut album. Why did you decide to release a standalone single first instead of a single coming off of the album?
There was a point where we thought that we could do a more straight forward song, a more thrashier song, something that has a little of a different vibe from the recording. And on the other hand, well the record is coming out in 2020, it’s a life sign for us, you know.
What can we expect from that single?
The single is something between Slayer and Sepultura, our guitar player Vasilis said it’s more like The Haunted. And we wanted a more raw sound. Something with more dynamic in it.
When can we expect it?
You can listen to it right now!
DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive premiere of Helldrifter’s very first single, Die Another Day, below.
Can we also expect some Helldrifter shows soon? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?
Sure, the train is rolling. I’m gonna invite some artists in the near future, outside from Germany to join us in gigs here, The Netherlands is a good place to look for, because you know we are neighbors and a gig exchange would be very likeable. I’ll let you know when, thats for sure!
Thanks for your answers. Is there anything you want to say to our readers?
Well, as Lemmy said many times in the past: It’s all about rock ‘n roll!
I’m Tim van Velthuysen and I started DutchMetalManiac back in 2014. I’m 29 years old and I live in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Of course, I like metal, but I can also appreciate other musical styles.
In addition to DutchMetalManiac I also have a personal website on which I’ll post various things that won’t fit on DutchMetalManiac, but might be interesting for you as well. It’s in Dutch though.
