Review: Slayer – The Repentless Killogy

Thrash metal dinosaurs Slayer have been around the metal universe since 1981 and have left their mark – being it influencing the genre as one of the “big four”, or as a major influence for many bands.

Tom Araya already hinted on a possible retirement for years, when in 2018 the disbanding after a last world tour was announced. The Slayer guys know their music, as well as when the time has come to retire (something that cannot be said for many fellow older bands) – and while being sad that an era is coming to an end, I find this no bullshit attitude very admirable.

No need to pack a sad, though! Slayer is releasing a live album, entitled The Repentless Killogy, to keep us company long after the guys retired. It will be released on November 8th via Nuclear Blast and is actually the soundtrack of a concept film of the same name, based on the Slayer songs and featuring a concert of the guys.

Coming back to the music: the concert was recorded at the Forum in Inglewood (USA) back in 2017, and features a cross section of their entire discography. I love the classics, so I was very thrilled to find Raining Blood, South of Heaven and Angel of Death on there, as well as my all-time favorite, Disciple. In total, the concert comprises 23 songs, and as the guys are not big talkers, mostly music – so there you get your money’s worth. Production is good as well, while still being a bit rough around the edges – in my opinion a perfect balance to distill the essence of a Slayer concert and transport that atmosphere to the listener. Get your hands on The Repentless Killogy, yell Slayer on top of your lungs and bang your head – for that the guys will live on forever in our memory.
