Interview: Halysis

In May the Finnish metallers of Halysis released their debut album, titled Cerulean. Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed them.

Hey, how are you?

We’re doing great, thanks!

Can you tell us something about the history of Halysis?

Halysis started around 6th grade, when Jose (guitar), Santeri (bass) and Samuel (drums) began playing together. At first we practised a lot of covers from other bands, such as Trivium, Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine and As I Lay Dying. Soon we started to write our own stuff too, and right about that time we wanted to have two guitars in the band. We went searching for one online and there we found our second guitarist Santeri. Around 2015 we really started to write our debut album Cerulean.

For people not knowing Halysis (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

We’re a combination of brutal/fast riffs and memorable melodies. If you like melodic death metal, metalcore or modern metal with some progressive elements here and there, we’re sure you can find our music interesting!

When someone doesn’t know Halysis yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

Probably Frailty, because it has a bit of everything and it shows our capability in music and creativity. It’s one of our favorite tracks for sure!

What makes Halysis unique?

We think that we managed to capture an unique sound and atmosphere in our debut album. It was a long process with some ups and downs, but we managed to get a good variety of styles and feelings to the album, without breaking the dominating atmosphere in the music, which is dark and desperate with a little hint of hope.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

New music is always in the making and this time around we managed to get a new singer to join our group! We’re very excited about the future and all the new things ahead of us!

Any upcoming gigs for band? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

Not yet unfortunately, but we’d love to come play shows in The Netherlands!

How do you think your life would be without music?

Now that I’m so much involved in music, it would be a sad thought to not do anything with it. Personally, if I wouldn’t have chosen to do music as a hobby and potential career, I would most likely be doing sports, probably football!
-Samuel (drums/vocals)

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

Just have fun with your friends and see where it takes you with the music! At the early stages some things might be a bit overwhelming, but try not to overthink too much. In the end the only thing that matters is music and the fact that you’re having fun with it! Everything else will come as the time goes on.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?
