Interview: Sentinel Complex

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Sentinel Complex.

Hey, how are you?

Pretty good all things considered! Hopefully all is well with you guys and your readers too.

Can you tell us something about the history of Sentinel Complex?

We’ve been making music together since 2014, but we weren’t really a band until we re-branded in 2016 to what we now know as Sentinel Complex. We started out doing all kinds of music and sfx for a bunch of indie game and film projects while we were learning on the go and slowly getting the hang of things, and then eventually just said “we could do this as a band you know” to each other, now here we are!

For people not knowing Sentinel Complex (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

Our songs are never the same, and we like to experiment with new ideas and writing processes. Expect a mix of metal, electronic music and film score, and see what happens!

When someone doesn’t know Sentinel Complex yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

Probably our latest song, Demise Of The Faithful, because it is probably the most accurate representation at the current time of all the genres that we love to merge together all in one song.

What makes Sentinel Complex unique?

Like we said, we love to constantly push ourselves and try new things in which we personally haven’t heard very widely done before. Whether it comes from trying new song structures or merging things like a techno beat and metal riffs in our own unique way, we always have plenty of ideas to keep things fresh.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

All we can really say about our future plans is that we will be steadily releasing music over the next year or so. We want to drop a number of singles and then eventually collate them into one collective album! We have a couple of projects we are really excited about though so keep your eyes peeled!

Any upcoming gigs for Sentinel Complex? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

We would love to! We aren’t currently a touring band however it is definitely something we would like to start doing at some point once we have the necessary equipment and funding!

How do you think your life would be without music?

Honestly our lives would be completely different, let alone probably a lot sadder! There isn’t really anything about our individual lives that doesn’t include music in one way or another, plus music has both helped us so much in the worst times so it would be a rather unfortunate drastic change. One that we aren’t really down for making haha!

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

Do whatever the hell makes you happy, and don’t follow everyone else when it comes to “what works and what doesn’t”. A quote we always like to bring up is from one of our main inspirations Hans Zimmer which is – if there is a rule, break it because that is the only thing that moves things forward. Yeah you may get some people hating you because you aren’t the norm which they are used to but we guarantee that there is a much bigger audience out there that will love what you do, even if you haven’t quite reached them yet!

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

Stay safe, and we appreciate every one of you for reading!
