Interview: Boneyard

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Boneyard.

Hey, how are you?

Good, it was just announced this morning that the Covid vaccines were approved here in Canada. Hopefully, we can have live music again soon!

Can you tell us something about the history of Boneyard?

Pamtera wanted to put together a hard rock cover project back in 2015. Some of my previous projects have included drummer Jeff Cunningham, so he was the first to join. We performed in local clubs for a year before new bass player Dennis auditioned in 2016. The following year, we decided to take the band in a new direction- all original.

In May of 2019, we entered producer/engineer Cam Macleod’s [White Wolf] Wolfs Den studio in Edmonton and began recording our debut album. After an extended COVID-19 pause, we returned to complete the project in August of 2020. Eleven tracks were then sent to be mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Halford, Armored Saint, Anvil) in Los Angeles, USA. What emerged is the Oathbreaker album, released on October 24, 2020. The first single, Fates Warning, dropped on October 17, 2020.

For people not knowing Boneyard (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

A bombastic hard rock sound, mixed with Pamtera’s clean and edgy vocals, with classic heavy metal influences.

When someone doesn’t know Boneyard yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

The single, Fates Warning. We have a hybrid performance/ lyric video for it, so people can get a visual introduction to us as well.

What makes Boneyard unique?

With our influences setting the stage, we really tried to make a powerful, diverse album. Diverse in the way that some songs are softer, with clean parts, and others that get quite aggressive with double bass drums and Maiden-esk galloping rhythms. Two main constants throughout our songs are the great vocal melodies, and guitar solos provided by Grant Tarapacki. What makes us unique is our Canadian metal sound, and Pamtera. In addition to lead vocals, she also plays rhythm and lead guitar.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

We are anticipating the arrival of our vinyl Oathbreaker records any day, so they will be available to purchase very soon. Also, production of the video for the second single, Oathbreaker, will commence right after Christmas.

Any upcoming gigs for the band? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

Due to Covid restrictions here in Canada we can’t perform live until further notice. We would love to play, and visit, The Netherlands!

How do you think your life would be without music?

Everybody has at least one passion. I’m no different, I would probably travel more and expand on my fishing hobby.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

To use the internet to your advantage. Try to find as many contacts as you can to promote whatever your band has going on.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

First thing is to thank DMM for the interview, and a holiday greeting from Canada!
