Interview: Karly Jewell

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Karly Jewell.

Hey, how are you?

Great. Thank you and very busy. We are excited to have our new single Dancing With The Devil finally out.

Can you tell us something about the history of Karly Jewell?

We are a four-piece rock band based in Melbourne, Australia. Members: Karly Jewell – singer song-writer, Mariano Marcos – drums, David Beaton – bass and Adrian Kluke – guitar. We have been non-stop since the band started close to 11 years ago. The band have seen international shows and tours and plenty of hometown and interstate shows in Australia.

For people not knowing Karly Jewell (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

It’s rock, it gets heavy, it’s pop and dark melodic at times I would say. It’s unique and when people listen they would know it’s a sound or track Karly Jewell and her band would create. We are a solid rock band and I really found my home in rock but I write off feelings so we often bring elements together from different genres without even trying.

When someone doesn’t know Karly Jewell yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

That’s a hard one, I mean right now everyone is getting the new one, Dancing With The Devil. I am so proud of this track and the guys. I mean I think back to when I was writing this with these sounds and ideas in my head, then to bring it to life was something amazing.

I normally send a link to the album to introduce myself if people ask, then they get a full story of who I am.

What makes Karly Jewell unique?

I think each of us are unique as are all band members in other bands. We stand out with sound and vocals being unique I’m also a small human so when this big voice comes out it normally makes people stop at live shows. In 2019, after many shows in a row and back to back weekends we started to get a name around the town for being one of the loudest rock bands and I think every time we play the guys keep getting louder and louder. I was very lucky to have met and had the chance to hang out with the late Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead in Los Angeles, he told me it doesn’t matter what you do kid, you always have to be the loudest band in the room, so when Lemmy gives you advise you listen. Just really having a signature sound. In our case we also have four members bringing four decades of different music styles to the table which generates the Karly Jewell sound. The old school rock, the hard hitting 80’s thumping drum sound and plenty of 90s influence in there, also then I bring all the darkness and story telling in on the vocals.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

We have shows booked and lots more to come. We would love to travel again but that will all have to wait until the world heals. Dancing With The Devil has been picked up by John Raptis, owner of Rue Morgue Records for the latest compilation album Murders In The Rue Morgue Vol ll to be released in April along with some of Australia’s biggest rock acts.

Any upcoming gigs for Karly Jewell? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

More shows coming to Melbourne and a huge show announcement for Bendigo, Victoria coming up. We would love to come to The Netherlands, if there’s a stage for us to play on then we want to be on it.

How do you think your life would be without music?

A life without music? I wouldn’t know how to breathe, it’s like the air to my lungs. If anything I might be rich because we all know it’s a costly passion to have but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

Always learn as much as you can and remember it’s your journey. Never rush any project, take your time. Practise and practise, do the live shows, put the hard work in, know how to have fun but also know how to focus when the hard work needs to be done. Most important never stop dreaming.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

We would love to thank you for giving us a moment to share a little of our story and who we are. The band and I would love for you all to check out the new track Dancing With The Devil and the Phoenix album.

We are growing our music family so would love for you to all jump on our social pages and join the rock and roll family.
