Interview: The Hellfreaks

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed The Hellfreaks.

Hey, how are you?

Hello there, I’m doing great! Thank you for having me!

Can you tell us something about the history of The Hellfreaks?

We’re The Hellfreaks, a band from Hungary, which is in the middle of nowhere in the international rock world. We’re a punk rock metal band and are pretty unique in our country. There are very few bands that play rock music with a girl at the front but definitely no punk rock bands with a female singer. Somehow, with a bit of luck and a hell of a lot of work, we’ve managed to play way more shows over the border than in Hungary. We’ve played over 250 gigs across Europe and also made it over the big pond and toured in the US.

With the years, not only has the line up changed, but also the music. It started as a hobby band, with music that was way more ’billy influenced that has now climbed so many levels that we’re able to do our modern influenced punk rock with a portion of metal thrown in that we call our own.

After 10 years, we’ve released 4 albums and a few videoclips, which together have accumulated more than 7 million views and sold over 5000 records. We’re very happy about how things turned out but we’re certainly far from the finish line!

For people not knowing The Hellfreaks (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

If you check us live you can expect loud rock music, sweat, headbanging, honesty and a show with no breaks. To use the words of someone who has actually seen our show from the audience – “At the beginning of your show I thought I would head to the bar to grab a beer when it calmed down a little… but now your show is over and I’m thirsty as hell!”

Don’t waste your time if you’re into stereotypes. If you like rock music, you are definitely walking the right path with us. If you’re sick of those poppy sweet notes, feel free to come closer! We play loud and fast modern rock music with a unique female voice on the mic. We’re the sound for kids who grew up with rock’n roll, punk, metal and hardcore – because that’s what we’re into! And we love to mix these elements and spice them up with a modern touch.

When someone doesn’t know The Hellfreaks yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

Men In Grey

What makes a band unique?

If they are brave enough to move out of genre boundaries.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

It’s a bit crazy, as we just released our latest album God On The Run a year ago, but we already work on new songs. Even though what might be more interesting to our fans: we have 2 music videos recorded that we haven’t released yet. 🙂

Any upcoming gigs for The Hellfreaks? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

For now because of Covid we can’t, or rather don’t dare to plan any shows, so we’re focusing 100% on the creative process. But The Netherlands is for sure on our list! We played in almost every European country, but somehow we never had the luck to stop by for a show in The Netherlands. We have to fix that! 🙂

How do you think your life would be without music?

One of my favorite quotes about music is, that “If art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.” That being said, I think without music some of our time would definitely lose value.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

I don’t think anyone warned me about the downfalls back then when I started to play in a band. You might think that it only affects you, but trust me, it’s simply part of it. Everyone faces an endless amount of closed doors before they knock on an open one. The difference is in how quick you can stand up and straighten your crown.
