Interview: Vulgarithm

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Vulgarithm.

Hey, how are you?

All good thank you, considering our current climate I’m doing ok.

Can you tell us something about the history of Vulgarithm?

The band is just myself, but I’m currently still in another band and I’ve had projects on and off for over 10 years now which never really hit the ground. I need to get a fresh start with some new ideas, not just with music but how it’s presented visually to stand out from the crowd. I’ve always been influenced by big riff bands, the ones that have a nice groove or a bit of bounce behind it, but I’d started going to Bluedot Festival for years back and got heavily influenced by the sounds and light shows of big name electronica artists like Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Underworld, Jean Michel Jarre etc and heading down the bath of combining my love of early 2000s metal with mid 90s dance.

For people not knowing Vulgarithm (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

Riff Rave. Drop C tuning riffs (low enough for heavy, not too low for ridiculous) with some big beats underneath. Imagine if System Of A Down collaborated with The Prodigy on a very basic level, but there is so much more to it than that.

When someone doesn’t know Vulgarithm yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

I do have a song called The Vulgar Rhythm which is piss take hype song introducing myself, but to really describe where I’m heading, we’ll say I cannot take this country seriously. It has the driving riffs, the beats and the sarcastic narcissistic lyrics that flow through most of my songs.

What makes Vulgarithm unique?

No one I know of is actually creating this sound as their signature sound. The closest band who even attempted something like this was Korns dubstep phase, however that was for just one album and it was a very strict genre type. Korn were almost limited to what they could do with dubstep however I feel that I take influences from all kinds of different dance genres, melting them into a big riff pot and coming up with something special. I have create a Youtube playlist of club classics I do covers of which should give you a glimpse of what I’m doing (Renegade Master, Hey Boy Hey Girl, Set You Free etc) here.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

I have a new single out Feb 19th on all platforms called Out my way! which will be followed by more singles and an EP which will round off the EP trilogy. So far we’ve had Share if you agree, then Share if you disagree, and finally Share in the 3rd Degree, which should be out sometime in March or April.

Any upcoming gigs for Vulgarithm? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

None as yet, in fact as Vulgarithm was born in the back end of 2019, we haven’t done a face to face gig, so I am raring to go with that one. I’ve only been to The Netherlands once, the guy at border control laughed at my fresh faced photo as my beard was very long then. The Netherlands was fun.

How do you think your life would be without music?

I have no idea. Music has been a part of me as a child, it is what I concentrated on in school and it’s what I do for a living when I’m not making music. I’ve never got into anything else to even consider it.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

The music industry has changed so much in the last 5 years let alone 10 or 20 years. As we get to grips with our current situation, I’d say be patient, whether that is finding the right musicians, writing songs, finding gigs and pushing yourselves out there. Hone in on your craft.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

I have LOADS of music out across the internet, and they are all different, so try at least 3 songs before you make your mind up! Hahaha, Thanks a lot for talking with me.
