Interview: Valfreya

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Valfreya’s violinist/backing vocalist Maude Theberge.

Hey, how are you?

Very good, thank you!

Can you tell us something about the history of Valfreya?

In 2009, Corinne (singer) wanted to create a band that mixes the symphonic and orchestral parts of classical music, the festive and authentic parts of folk and Celtic music with the aggressive and energic parts of death/black metal. Members joined the crew and we produced 4 albums.

For people not knowing Valfreya (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

Valfreya sends a rush of vicious folk and symphonic metal around the world, taking all the jolly melodies from the genre, but then making it faster and more aggressive.

When someone doesn’t know Valfreya yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

I would choose our last single Warlords, because it’s the song that represents our older and new music best.

What makes Valfreya unique?

We mix a bunch of different styles that makes a unique sound!

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

We’re currently working on our 5^th (metal) album.

Any upcoming gigs for Valfreya? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

With the pandemic, we unfortunately do not have any gigs coming and we do not know when we’ll be able to play live again, but as soon as it’s all over we’ll play shows! We’d love to come to The Netherlands!

How do you think your life would be without music?

Terribly sad.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

It’s very hard to be a musician and some days you will want to give up, but don’t. Keep pushing and you’ll get where you want to get eventually.
