Interview: Kilter

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Kilter.

Hey, how are you?

I’m fine, thank you!

Can you tell us something about the history of Kilter?

Sure yes, Kilter is a Brooklyn based metal jazz band I created in 2018. We, Kenny, Ed and myself, are big fans of improvisation, jazz, metal and many other musical expressions. We started by playing in clubs in NY and decided to record a debut-EP, an album (AXIOM), and this EP, SYS, which will be released on June 25th!

For people not knowing Kilter (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

First, the band is a power trio, with no guitar. Actually, it’s a 2 bass players band: 1 electric bass, 1 bass saxophone and drums. We play doom jazz or metal jazz and we want people to be surprised of what we can do with these instruments. What is funny is the fact we can play in jazz or metal clubs and venues, and received an independent Music Award in a jazz category! Let us know what style you think we play.

When someone doesn’t know Kilter yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

Ax & Spear or Spherical Bastards (feat. Per Nilsson) on AXIOM.

What makes Kilter unique?

I guess the bass saxophone.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

Sure yes! Stay tuned about SYS, a 3 tunes EP to discover on June 25th 2021.

Any upcoming gigs for Kilter? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

We’d love too, we are waiting for better times to book new gigs, but maybe before the end of 2021.

How do you think your life would be without music?

I have no idea, I can’t do nothing else, and it’s my job since 1997…

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

To practice, play and to have something to tell. To the parents: Don’t let your children being a musician! lol, or, if you do, support them as much as you can.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

Yes, thank you. Because we had many merch orders from The Netherlands and believe me, it really helps for making new productions.
