Interview: Cavern Deep

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Cavern Deep.

Hey, how are you?

I am good! The pandemic is slowly dying, and shows are returning this summer as it seems which I am very happy about.

Can you tell us something about the history of Cavern Deep?

We are a rather new band. Officially we became a band in 2019 when Kenny-O got us together. We recorded our debut album last autumn which is releasing through Interstellar Smoke Records the 23rd of July.

For people not knowing Cavern Deep (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

Cavern Deep is a slow, earthy, and heavy band with lots of doom and stoner psychedelia in it. The debut self-titled album is about one archeologist and his crew of ambitious henchmen and their descent into the cavernous realm below the crust of the earth.

When someone doesn’t know Cavern Deep yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

The best song for that would probably be Fungal Realm or Waterways. Those would be our hits, Fungal Realm is my favourite.

What makes Cavern Deep unique?

Cavern Deep is unique because we play doom, but it is not only doom. We draw a lot of influence from all kinds of places. There’s lots of blues vibes in there and also a lot of psychedelic prog elements. There’s some goth vibes at a couple of points.

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

After we’ve released the first record in July, we are going to release even more music. Last weekend we entered the studio again. So that’s coming up, we aren’t sure exactly when yet though.

Furthermore, we are going to release a animated video series following the release of the album where you can follow the albums concept through the songs.

Any upcoming gigs for Cavern Deep? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

We are planning on doing a couple of shows in Sweden and one in Germany this autumn. There is nothing that’s set-in stone yet though as we’ll have to see were it goes with the pandemic. So not in The Netherlands unfortunately, but if you do not mind a 7-hour drive to see us this year it might be possible!

How do you think your life would be without music?

That is a very hard question. I would probably work with computers as I already do. Before I started playing music, I was spending all my free time at the computer so it is very possible that I would still if it wasn’t for music.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

My best advice would probably be to not try to sound exactly like your influences. How ever hard you try you will never sound the same as someone else, so you would rather want to spend your time trying to find the way to make the best out of your own sound. People listening appreciate that as well.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

Thanks for having me! I would encourage people if they haven’t, to check out our music. A good place to start is probably on our Youtube channel or our Bandcamp. Otherwise you can find us on social media: Instagram and Facebook. And on all streaming platforms. Cheers everyone!
