Interview: Misfire

Recently, DutchMetalManiac’s Tim van Velthuysen interviewed Misfire.

Hey, how are you?

Jim: Feeling pretty pumped for the new record!

Can you tell us something about the history of Misfire?

Jim: Misfire was formed by Sean, Tommy Denniger, and myself. Tommy eventually moved on from the band and Jay Johnson took over his role as the lead vocal/guitar player. I’ve known Jay since we were in 5th grade and have been playing music together since 7th grade. That is a pretty big advantage having all these years together and it’s a pleasure playing with both Sean and Jay.

For people not knowing Misfire (yet), how would you describe your music yourself?

Sean: It’s a freight train of pounding drums, heavy bass, and ripping guitar… driven by screaming maniacs.

When someone doesn’t know Misfire yet and you can choose one of your songs to present yourself, which song would that be?

Sean: No Offense, because of my bass solo of course… Honestly, I dig all of our tunes, I can’t pick just one.

Jim: Red Flag, because that’s the first song I wrote after taking 3 years off.

What makes Misfire unique?

Sean: I play bass through a JCM 800, it makes it extra heavy…

Jim: We never play the same thing twice and it’s even cooler when we do it on purpose. Haha

Any future plans you can already tell us something about?

Jim: We have a second album already written and demoed. Should be out early next year.

Any upcoming gigs for Misfire? Maybe coming to The Netherlands?

I wish we could! We have 2 shows in May. One in Joliet IL on the 23rd of May and one in Hobart Indiana on the 1st of May.

How do you think your life would be without music?

Sean: I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I couldn’t play music, that is what keeps me going.

Jim: I probably wouldn’t be here. Music has helped me cope through some seriously heavy shit and I don’t think I would have made it this far without it.

Jay: Music is all I know. It’s been like that since I was a kid. I couldn’t do it.

What advice would you give to young and starting bands?

Sean: Music should always be fun, period. When it’s not, find a new band.

Jim: Don’t worry about anything except what you’re trying to achieve. Keep it simple at first and don’t take on more responsibilities than you can handle. This is supposed to be fun and make sure it is. Build, learn, fail, try again, try harder, and be patient.

Thanks for your answers! Is there anything you want to say to DutchMetalManiac’s readers?

Sean: Turn it up and stay heavy!

Jim: Check out our new album Sympathy for the Ignorant out May 1st! Stay heavy!
