Undawn

We start this part of Promoting Bands with a band coming from own soil. Michiel Brinkhuis, Leon Kloosterman (both guitar/vocals), Thijs Brinkhuis (bass/vocals) and Tom Brinkhuis (drums) are the guys of Undawn. In 2011 they released their debut titled Jumpers, back then without Leon Kloosterman, but with his predecessor Jord Brinkhuis. Four years later their second full-length album Justice Is… followed, which we reviewed here. Last November they again released new material, this time it’s an EP titled Solidarity. Solidarity is about breaking with negative patterns that withhold us from growing in life and become solidary with ourselves again in an era of (fake) perfection. Recently the band asked themselves whether their songs were still metalcore enough, which resulted in inspiration for this EP. Solidarity is melodic and catchy, but at the same time heavy and brutal. Without overdosing it Undawn also threw in some quite refreshing elements, so that Solidarity stays interesting throughout its entirety. A few examples of that being the grooving start of Implode and the atmospheric part followed by roaring guitars towards the end of Head of Doubt. Whether your opinion is that Undawn’s music on Solidarity is metalcore enough or not, it’s almost impossible to deny that Undawn sounds very refreshing on Solidarity. Whatever you want to call Undawn’s music, it definitely is clear that they released a very strong EP with Solidarity.

Popiół

Popiół, maybe you recognize that name. For the people to who that name says nothing: it was the title of Thy Worshiper’s debut, released back in 1996. Soon after the recordings of that debut album Thy Worshiper had quite some new material ready for a second album, which was planned for a 1998 release. There surely was a second Thy Worshiper album released, but in 2005 instead of in 1998 and not containing the above-mentioned material. Twenty years after that long hidden material was written, Thy Worshiper’s Marcin Gąsiorowski (MAG in Popiół) and ex-Thy Worshiper’s Bartek (Bard in Popiół), Adam Tuchowski (Kubov in Popiół) and Michał Kowal (DQ in Popiół) decided to form Popiół to finally release this material. Last February they released it via their fellow Polish record label Godz ov War Productions. This debut of Popiół is titled Zabobony. Popiół plays black metal in a very mysterious way that regularly sounds very pummeling, such as in Chmury, but also contains quite some very calm moments without losing that dark, mysterious vibe, such as in A Kysz and Czerń.

Popiół Facebook

Warfist

The next band, Warfist, also hails from Poland and also plays black metal. While Popiół played pagan black metal, their fellow Poles of Warfist play more thrashing black metal. In 2014, after releasing one EP and a few splits, Warfist released their full-length debut. The title of that debut, The Devil Lives in Grünberg, refers to the old German name of the former German, currently Polish, hometown of Warfist, nowadays called Zielona Góra. That debut full-length was followed by another full-length album titled Metal to the Bone, which we reviewed here, and a split with Excidium titled Laws of Perversion & Filth. Last February drummer Pavulon and guitarist/vocalist Mihu, Warfist’s current line-up, released a new full-length the title of which again refers to Grünberg. That album’s title is Grünberger and is released via Godz ov War Productions. Do you like listening to some heavily pummeling blackthrash? Then be sure to listen to Warfist’s Grünberger!

Here you can also read our earlier interview with Warfist.

Malignity

The next band, Malignity, also comes, just as Undawn, from own soil. Earlier we already wrote a live review about their show on Army of Metal, here, as well as a review of the Army of Metal compilation, here. Since their formation in 2005 this band only had one line-up change, guitarist Patrick Pardoel isn’t a member of Malignity anymore and is replaced by guitarist Bas Verkleij. Furthermore Malignity consists of guitarist Albert Cromwijk, vocalist Alexander Schuilenburg, bass player Sjors Bogaart and drummer Paul Stijntjes. In 2014 Malignity released their debut full-length, titled The Promise, on which they show a combination of black and death metal together with some old school heavy metal influences. So far The Promise is Malignity’s sole album, but they are working on a second album. The tracks Darkness of Hell, Dark War, Warrior Thougths and Immortal Hate, off of this upcoming album, are already hearable on Malignity’s website. Recently they also released a video for Immortal Hate, which you can watch below.

Cattle Decapitation

Of course Cattle Decapitation is very well-known within extreme metal for quite a while already. The band around very powerful frontman Travis Ryan recently released their eighth full-length album. Death Atlas, as this album is titled, is the first album on which we can hear bass player Olivier Pinard and guitarist Belisario Dimuzio, who both joined Cattle Decapitation in 2018, next to Travis Ryan, guitarist Josh Elmore and drummer David McGraw. As we are used to from Cattle Decapition, Death Atlas has become a very strong and powerful album that crushes in a very well executed way. Of course, since it’s released, the entire album is now hearable, but I want to give some special attention to the short movie that was released a week before the album release. That short movie is made in collaboration with Wes Benscoter, the man responsible for Death Atlas‘ artwork as well as many other pieces of Cattle Decapitation artwork. That short movie, titled The Unerasable Past, merges one piece of the track with the same name with Death Atlas‘ title track, the last two tracks on the album. This merged piece, just as Death Atlas in its entirety by the way, sounds very impressive and the visuals that Wes Benscoter added to it are very impressive as well. So, this definitely is very recommended, the The Unerasable Past short movie as well as the Death Atlas album!

Wolf Jaw

We’ll start this part of Promoting Bands not that heavy. You want it heavier? Don’t be disappointed, heavier stuff will come your way. The band that nowadays is called Wolf Jaw started in 2014 under the name The Bad Flowers. Wolf Jaw consists of guitarist/vocalist Tom Leighton, bass player/vocalist Dale Tonks and drummer Karl Selickis. Last year they released their full-length debut Starting Gun. For those who enjoy some nice rock’n’roll with a big amount of roaring guitars there is good news! On October the 25th, Wolf Jaw released a successor to Starting Gun. This successor is titled The Heart Won’t Listen and was released via Listenable Records. On The Heart Won’t Listen Wolf Jaw are continuing with what they started on Starting Gun: rocking very nicely while the guitars are especially standing out! Do you like some very nice rock? Be sure to listen to The Heart Won’t Listen, as you can do below!

Laurentian Tides

Four years ago, in 2015, the progressive metal band Laurentian Tides was formed. Two years later the first studio-material of this band was released, debut EP Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is definitely a recommended listen if you like progressive metal that is more towards the brutal progressive metal of, for example, Between The Buried And Me, compared to the a bit more melodic progressive metal of, for example, Dream Theater. Nowadays, Laurentian Tides’ line-up has changed in one position, compared to the line-up to be heard on Sacred Geometry. It’s the position of bass player, on Sacred Geometry Tom Chappel was playing the bass, nowadays Kenny Herrick is doing so. Furthermore Laurentian Tides consists of vocalist Alejandro Aguirre, guitarist Bill Hughes and percussionist Richardoug Harris. That line-up already went to the studio to record Sacred Geometry‘s successor. That successor will be Laurentian Tides’ debut full-length, titled In the Wake of the Great Collapse. They will release this debut full-length on March the 13th next year. Recently they already released a first single coming off of this album, titled Malign, a very promising song that can be listened to below.

The Black Moriah

In 2009, The Black Moriah was formed by drummer/vocalist The Mad Arab and guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Zawicizuz and in 2012 they released their debut full-length Casket Prospects. At that moment, The Black Moriah’s line-up consisted, besides The Mad Arab and Zawicizuz, of vocalist Pete Brown, bass player/vocalist Maledon and guitarist Alkahest. Currently The Black Moriah again only consists of founding members The Mad Arab and Zawicizuz. Earlier this year, in March, they released their second full-length album, titled Road Agents of the Blast Furnace. That album has become a nice, fast-paced black/thrash album with quite some accentuation on the guitars. The sound of those guitars is very nice, during the tight riffing as well as during the regularly returning roaring solo’s. To get an idea of this, be sure to check this album’s title song or Death Valley Days. Is black/thrash metal something that makes you go wild? Then be sure to check this Road Agents of the Blast Furnace by The Black Moriah!

Sons of Alpha Centauri

The next band in this part of Promoting Bands is again playing music that is a bit less heavy compared to the last two mentioned bands. This band, Sons of Alpha Centauri, consisting of guitarist Marlon King, bass player Nick Hannon, drummer Stevie B and Blake, who is responsible for the electronics, are playing ambient-like post-metal with some progressive touches. As you probably already noticed looking at this band’s line-up, they do so the instrumental way. Sons of Alpha Centauri formed in 2001 and in 2004 they released their first demo, simply titled Demo 2004. In 2007 that demo was followed by their self-titled full-length debut. After that another two full-length albums, as well as four splits, followed. Recently Sons of Alpha Centauri released a new, fourth full-length album, titled Buried Memories. On Buried Memories Sons of Alpha Centauri worked together with Justin K. Broadrick and James Plotkin. Justin mixed opener Hitmen and also made two remixes of it, one as Jesu and one as JK Flesh. James Plotkin mixed Warhero and Remembrance and made a remix of SS Montgomery, a song of which the original version can be found on Sons of Alpha Centauri’s debut. Buried Memories is an album to completely dream away to. This is an experience you have to have by yourself to fully understand what it’s about. An experience you have to take some time for, but that’s definitely worth it.

Head of the Baptist

The next band of this part of Promoting Bands is again giving the amount of heaviness a boost, it’s about the Belgian black infested death crust band Head of the Baptist. Recently I went to the release party of The Fifth Alliance’s new album in the Little Devil in Tilburg to interview The Fifth Alliance. You can read that interview here. The supports of that evening were Depravation and this band, Head of the Baptist. I missed Depravation’s show because I was interviewing The Fifth Alliance at that moment. However, I saw Head of the Baptist, the evening’s first band, perform. They kicked off that evening in an awesome way. Off stage vocalist Niels, guitarists Dille and Millie, bass player Kurt and drummer Yenthe look like very kind Belgian guys, but as soon as they’ve entered the stage they deliver a devastating, crushing show with especially Niels standing out with his powerful, intense performance. The only studio-material this band has released since their formation in 2017 is a demo in 2018. The two songs on that demo already sound very devastating and crushing, while there is also given some attention to, for example, variation. Quite good, especially for a debut, although the quality of the recording is a bit less. On the other hand that’s quite logic, since it’s a demo. That demo already convinced me of Head of the Baptist being a nice band, but live they did prove that much more. This is a recommended band for sure!

Onhou

Onhou was founded in 2016 and consists of previous and current members of Killteam, Lords of Gravity, Wolvon, Grinding Halt and Ortega. Rooted in Groningen, the band embodies their northern heritage by mixing desolate sludgy doom riffs with miserable post-metal atmospheres, embracing the sinister history of the soil that made them.

Today sees the release of the video for their new track Dire, taken from the album Endling, which releases on November the 29th, 2019 on vinyl via Lay Bare Recordings, on tape via Tartarus Records and all digital platforms.

“Dire tells the story of demise hidden behind false gods and meaningless worship. In the end, only death awaits…. “ – Onhou

DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive Dutch video premiere of Onhou’s Dire below.

You can pre-order Endling on vinyl here and on tape here.

The Fifth Alliance

I already mentioned them earlier in our eighth part of Promoting Bands, the blackened sludgers of The Fifth Alliance. Back then the in 2015 released Death Poems was the band’s latest album. Since that time The Fifth Alliance had one line-up change, drummer Ashwin left and was replaced by Tim van der Zanden, who you might know as a former DutchMetalManiac writer. The other band members are vocalist Silvia Saunders, guitarists Niels Termote and Matthijs Keuvelaar and bass player Ruud Verhoeven. Now, four years after Death Poems‘ release, The Fifth Alliance released a successor to it. This successor, titled The Depth of the Darkness, became a very nice album, in which atmospheric melodies, Silvia’s intense vocals and Tim’s pounding drums are brought together in a perfect combination. This is dark, hypnotizing, intense and powerful, all together. The Depth of the Darkness is an album you wouldn’t want to miss! A very awesome album by a very nice band!

Vain Louie

Vocalist Ruben Jeurissen, guitarists Scott Hoeks (who also does backing vocals) and Thijs Janssen, bass player Willem Lam and drummer Sander Jeurissen play together in a band called Vain Louie. Their musical style is a mix between hardcore and metalcore, at some moments quite catchy, but also aggressive and pounding. In May last year they released their debut single Turning Point, accompanied by a video. Now these guys released a second single, again accompanied by a video. This second single is titled Danger of Death and is about the fear in a society in which the threat of terrorism only seems to become greater and greater, while the citizens are feeling more and more unsafe. Compared to Turning Point Vain Louie sounds much more powerful on Danger of Death, which surely became an awesome track. Is hardcore/metalcore something you dig? Be sure to check this out!

Cyanide Paradise

Earlier this year guitarist/vocalist Martin Vos and bass player Jeff Wennekes formed a new band, Cyanide Paradise. A bit later vocalist Linn Liv was added to the band and more recently Cyanide Paradise also welcomed second guitarist Sebastiaan Pongers as a band member, while they, based on their most recent Facebook post, probably already found there yet to be announced drummer. Cyanide Paradise’s musical style is melodic death metal. Despite the fact that Cyanide Paradise’s existence is quite short yet, they already released their debut EP in July. On Reach for the Stars, as this debut EP is titled, Cyanide Paradise shows to have found a very nice sounding balance between melody and brutality. Especially Linn Liv’s vocals that go through marrow and bone are standing out. Do you like to listen to melodic death metal? Be sure to give this debut EP by this very promising band called Cyanide Paradise a shot. You won’t be disappointed!

Martyr

The first active period of the heavy metallers of Martyr is already a while ago. That period, in which they released two albums, started in 1982 and ended in 1989. Since 2005, Martyr is back in active mode though and they again released two albums, one in 2011 and one in 2016. Of Martyr’s current line-up only guitarist Rick Bouwman and vocalist Rop van Haren experienced Martyr’s first active period as a band member. The other current band members are guitarist Geoffrey Maas, drummer Rick Valcon and bass player Vinnie Wassink. In February Martyr played live in Japan for the second time. Martyr recorded their shows in Osaka for a live album. That live album, titled Live in Japan, was released in May. On this live album it can be heard that Martyr played a very powerful show and that the vibe of the show is very nicely catched on the album.

Porselain

Vocalist Micky Huijsmans, guitarist Cas Kruse, bass player Jim Onstenk and drummer Wouter Macaré are Porselain. The music these four create is almost impossible to put in one specific box. On Porselain’s Youtube channel there are three songs to be found, a live version of Port, Hiraeth and Mortiferous, in an electric version as well as in an acoustic version. On these three songs Micky Huijsmans’ beautiful vocals that are full of emotion are standing out the most, while Porselain is also very nice instrumentally. Musically Porselain isn’t that heavy all the time, but almost all of it contains a very dark vibe. They also show a lot of variation where there seems to almost be no borders. Port sounds quite relaxed and loungy, while it later becomes heavier and almost sludgy, while Hiraeth sounds quite atmospheric and changes between dreamier, ritualistic-sounding more quiet parts and heavier post-metal parts. Mortiferous, of which the electric version is the most recently released video, mainly is quite quiet, but in a dark and tension-building way to explode in a heavy ending. Of course this is far less the case in Mortiferous‘ acoustic version, but that one is also definitely worth checking out! Just recently they announced that they are going to release their debut album, titled Duende, on October the 25th. I’m really looking forward to that!

Fister

A bit longer than a year ago I already mentioned them in our 16th part of Promoting Bands: the sludgers from Fister. At that moment their fourth full-length, No Spirit Within, was a few months old. Soon bass player/vocalist Kenny Snarzyk, drummer Kirk Gatterer and guitarist/vocalist Marcus Newstead will release No Spirit Within‘s successor, on September the 27th to be more precise. This successor is titled Decade of Depression and will be released, just as No Spirit Within, via Listenable Records. However, Decade of Depression doesn’t contain any new songs. With Decade of Depression Fister delivers seven covers in Fister-style and a re-recorded version of their own song The Failure. So, they may be covers but Fister executes them in their own, very nice way, giving songs such as Metallica’s For Whom The Bell Tolls and Danzig’s How The Gods Kill an extra raw and sludgy edge. You can see an album trailer for Decade of Depression below.

Petbrick

It may not directly be metal, but it surely is related to it and very nice. Petbrick, consisting of Iggor Cavalera and Wayne Adams, released their self-titled debut EP in May last year. Petbrick surely is recommended to everyone who likes the heavier sorts of electronical music such as industrial, but metalheads who can appreciate a bit of musical experimentation should also definitely check this out. In October Petbrick will be releasing a successor to this self-titled debut EP. This successor, a full-length, is titled I. I‘s opening song Horse is already available for a while, it kicks very heavily. On I Horse is followed by Radiation Facial, a song that also contains guest vocals by Full of Hell’s Dylan Walker. They recently released Radiation Facial, including a video.

The Hu

Maybe you already know The Hu from their viral videos for Yuve Yuve Yu and Wolf Totem. In July I interviewed The Hu’s Gala (throat singing/morin khuur), Jaya (jaw harp/tsuur/flute/throat singing) and Enkush (morin khuur/throat singing) before their show in The Melkweg, Amsterdam. You can read that interview here and our live review of that show here. At that moment The Hu already announced that they were going to release their debut full-length, titled The Gereg, on September the 13th. In my live review I mentioned one of their new songs coming from The Gereg, The Great Chinggis Khaan, giving me goosebumps. Recently The Hu released this song, together with a video. Whether you already know The Hu or not, you have to check this out. It’s a very nice song and it is very promising for The Gereg.

Māra

Recently I received the debut album of the Latvian metal band Māra. This debut is titled Therapy For An Empath and is already almost a year old. They released it in November last year. However, I hadn’t heard about Māra before. After the short up building intro of Therapy For An Empath‘s opener Label Me Insane Māra convinced me pretty fast. What power! Therapy For An Empath grooves very nicely, while it also contains quite some melody. This album is a very strong, heavily pounding debut on which vocalist Māra Lisenko, guitarist Denis Melnik, bass player Dmitry Lisenko and drummer Alberts Mednis show what they are capable of in a very awesome way. Māra really suprises me with this debut and they made me very curious about the full-length album they are currently working on. That full-length album is expected early 2020.

Māra Facebook

Vestigial

Vestigial, consisting of Tyler and Michael Stellema, both taking care of vocals and guitars, bass player Joey Barnett and drummer Mike Miller, released their debut full-length, titled Fallen Skies, in June last year. Fallen Skies surely is an album that’s worth checking out, for those who like pounding grooves as well as for those who like melody. However, since Vestigial released Fallen Skies they didn’t sit on their hands. In November Vestigial are going to release Fallen Skies‘ successor. This successor, again a full-length, is titled Crown of Serpents. Recently Vestigial released the first single coming from Crown of Serpents, Dethroned, which sounds very promising for Crown of Serpents!

Left Hand Path

In 2014 the Romanian band Left Hand Path formed. Their current line-up consists of bass player Szenasi Attila, drummer José Morales, guitarists Ádám András and Wagner Tamás and vocalist Cristian Aionese. Left Hand Path’s musical style is progressive extreme metal. In the spring of 2018 this band had their live debut and on June the 17th they released their self-titled debut EP. This EP really pounds while also certainly including a progressive touch. On this EP Left Hand Path shows to have found a perfect balance between progressivity and extremity. This surely is recommended! In case you aren’t convinced yet, you can check Left Hand Path below and let yourself be blown away by these Romanian metallers. Left Hand Path surely sounds very promising and it wouldn’t surprise me when we’ll hear a lot more from this band in the future.

The Great Divide

In 2010 the Italian hardrockers of The Great Divide already started writing material and playing shows. However, they didn’t release any official studio material for quite a while. This also got delayed due to some line-up changes. Recently, the situation changed. On June the 17th The Great Divide, of which the current line-up consists of vocalist Mauro Pala, guitarists Pier Paolo Cianca and Gabriele Sorrentino, bass player Alessio Ripani and drummer Vladimiro Melchiorre, released its debut album. This debut album is titled Union Reloaded and is released via Agoge Records. Of course The Great Divide isn’t the heaviest band in this part of Promoting Bands, but in case you can also appreciate some nice hardrock besides your metal, this Union Reloaded by The Great Divide is definitely worth checking out. Below you can watch the video for Bone, a track coming from Union Reloaded. Bone shows that The Great Divide surely isn’t extreme metal, but it neither is just a simple radio-rock band. All tracks on Union Reloaded, piece by piece, are composed in a very strong way and show quite some variation.

Relinquished

The next band is, again, heavier and more extreme. It is the Austrian band Relinquished, consisting of vocalist Sebastian Bramböck, guitarist/clarinet player Anton Keuschnick, guitarist/vocalist Simon Dettendorfer, bass player Dominik Steffan and drummer Richard Marx. After their formation in 2004 they released their debut EP, titled Rehearshal Doom, in 2009. Two years later their debut full-length album Susanna Lies in Ashes followed, which was, again two years later, followed by Onward Anguishes. Now, five years after that last album, Relinquished released new material. This full-length album is titled Addictivities Part 1. It is an concept-album that chronologically should be seen as a prequel to Susanna Lies in Ashes. Relinquished pounds really heavily on Addictivies Part 1, but that doesn’t mean that Addictivities Part 1 is only just heavily pounding, to be honest it is far more than that. All tracks on this album, piece by piece, are gems, for as far as that word fits with extreme metal. In every track there is a lot to discover and there even might be something saved to discover for the next time listening. This surely is an album that needs to be experienced completely and that definitely is what this album deserves. It surely is worth your time. You still want a preview first? In that case you can check out their video for Addictivities Part 1‘s opening track Expectations below.

LINGUA IGNOTA

LINGUA IGNOTA, the solo project of Kristin Hayter, creates music that is very difficult to put in a genre. It definitely isn’t metal, but it includes metal-influences, just as it includes influences of, for example, noise, opera and industrial. LINGUA IGNOTA’s music also contains a very intense and dark atmosphere that might probably be to the liking of many metal listeners as well, something she also executes very well. In 2017 LINGUA IGNOTA released its debut album Let the Evil of His Own Lips Cover Him as well as successor All Bitches Die. Now, two years later, a third album was added to that. This third album is titled CALIGULA and was released on July the 19th via Profound Lore Records. Before the release date there were already two tracks of CALIGULA released, DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR and BUTCHER OF THE WORLD. Based on those two tracks CALIGULA had to become a masterpiece and now that it is released it seems that it indeed is a masterpiece, as you can hear below. In case you want to see her perform live, that’s possible! On October the 5th she will perform at the Soulcrusher Festival in Doornroosje, Nijmegen and on September the 27th and 28th she will be part of Amenra’s 20th anniversary at De Brakke Grond and Paradiso in Amsterdam.

Bruut

In 2017 vocalist/bass player Corinne van den Brand, known from Acrostichon and Razend, formed a new old school death metal band together with guitarist Albert de Bruijn and drummer Joris van Iersel, both known from, among others, Crustacean. This trio, named Bruut, recently released their debut EP. This EP is titled Bloodmoon and is released via Badger Records. The opening track, Bloodmoon‘s title track, immediately pounds very fast-paced, like it should be with old school death metal. Tempo changes are also present on Bloodmoon, but all is clearly delivered in a typical rattling old school death metal way. The rattling aspect of this EP makes that Bloodmoon sounds vile and raw, but in a way that it can still be heard that the members of Bruut are also just good in what they’re doing. Is old school death metal something you like to listen to? If yes, be sure to check out this debut EP, titled Bloodmoon, by the Dutch band Bruut, below!

Codename: Delirious

Combining electronic music with metal: that’s what bass player/composer Marco Catanzaro wanted and thus he formed Codename: Delirious. The current line-up of this Italian Codename: Delirious consists of, besides Marco, vocalist Omar Petrucci, guitarist Dario Frascati, drummer Cristian Rivera and Luca De Vecchi who plays the consolle. So, Codename: Delirious mixes electronic music with metal, to be a bit more specific they mix dubstep with metalcore. In December their debut full-length The Great Heartless was released via Agoge Records and on that album it can be heard that these Italians are delivering this mix very well. It sounds very energetic, pounds quite hard at some moments, but also contains some catchier parts. Vocally Omar Petrucci delivers raps, screams as well as clean vocals, all very well fitting with the music. Is metal with electronic influences something you can appreciate? Be sure to not miss The Great Heartless by Codename: Delirious! Below you can check the video for Bridge Over Alpha-Z, a track that pounds quite heavily, but also shows the catchier side of Codename: Delirious.

Vardan

It’s already twelve years ago that the atmospheric black metal one-man band Vardan released its debut album Hidden in a Tomb. Since that time Vardan released many splits and albums, the last one being a split with German metallers Triebtat. However, soon a new Vardan-release will be out. This time it’s about a full-length album, to be more precise Vardan’s 32nd full-length album! This album will be titled The Wish of Weeping and contains three very dark and atmospheric tracks with a total length of almost 40 minutes. The atmosphere that Vardan creates with his music is dark and atmospheric, but also mysterious and hypnotizing, which makes you get pulled into The Wish of Weeping entirely. This album will be released on July the 26th via Moribund Records, but now you can already hear something from it, because DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive track premiere of the closing track of The Wish of Weeping, The Wish of Weeping Pt. 3, below.

Rise of the Wood

I already mentioned the next band, the Dutch band Rise of the Wood, earlier in Promoting Bands. That was in the 11th part of it, which you can read here. At that moment Rise of the Wood’s debut album First Seed wasn’t released yet. A half year later, when First Seed was released, I interviewed their bass player Alex Wijnhorst. You can read that interview here. Now vocalist Nol van Vliet, guitarists Jeff Teunissen and Ronald Boonstra, bass player Alex Wijnhorst and drummer Erik Stolze, the five band members of Rise of the Wood, released a new track. This track is titled Ludicrous and can be listened to below. Ludicrous sounds, just as First Seed, pretty catchy, but at the same time also quite heavy and raw. Hopefully this Ludicrous is a very nice teaser for more new material of Rise of the Wood!

Temples on Mars

The next band is the London based heavy progressive rock band Temples on Mars. Last year they released their self-titled debut album and today they released a new live video for Black Mirror, coming from that debut album. DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive Dutch premiere of that live video below. However, it isn’t just a live video, it is a 360 VR live video and it was shot during Temples on Mars’ performance at Prog Power Europe last year. Temples on Mars’ bass guitarist Daz Carikas said the following about Black Mirror‘s live video: “Temples on Mars are excited to release the first 360 VR video in a series recorded live at Prog Power Europe 2018. Immerse yourself in the live experience and feel what it’s like to be onstage with the boys!”

Mass Insanity

The next band, the Polish metallers of Mass Insanity, is a very heavily pounding band. Mass Insanity, consisting of vocalist Mały, guitarists Rafał and Viehu, bass player Tolas and drummer Hektor, exists since 2003. Since that time these Polish death metallers released three demo’s, one compilation on which the demo’s In Deadly Silence and Language of the Dead are combined and two full-length albums. In 2011 they released their debut full-length The Hypochrist, four years later the second one Antihuman followed. Now, again four years later, Antihuman got a successor in the form of Maveth. Maveth was released on March the 15th via More Hate Productions and while opening track Legal Racism starts quite melodic, this album is a very heavily pounding, neck-breaking album. Hektor and Tolas show to be a perfect back-bone with the very strong rhythm-work they deliver. That makes that Rafał and Viehu can execute their tight riffing very well, but they also show some nicely ripping solo’s. Mały’s vocals are also very important for Mass Insanity’s music, with his intense grunts and at some moments his scream-like vocals. This way all members of Mass Insanity contribute a big part to Maveth, which makes it very strong and raging in its entirety. The fact that the production is also done very well, without sounding over-produced, is making that even better. Do you like death metal? Don’t miss Mass Insanity’s Maveth! You can listen to it below.

Charcoalcity

The Belgian band Charcoalcity, consisting of Peter De Zutter, Timo De Vreese and Anthony Hooft, released its debut album Greyscale in 2016. On Greyscale they delivered some very nice sounding industrial metal. Later this year Greyscale will get a successor in the form of Blood and Water. However, the first single of Blood and Water is already released. From July the 5th on this single can also be found on streaming services, but as of now it already can be heard on Youtube. This first single is called Black Rain and can be heard below. Black Rain again shows some nice industrial metal, with quite a dark and atmospheric edge to it. If this Black Rain is representative for Blood and Water in its entirety, it can’t be something other than a good album. Black Rain surely is a nice teaser for it!

Black Rock

Since 2012, the Finns M. Vehmaa (drums) and T. Willberg (guitars/vocals) play blackened heavy metal under the banner of Black Rock. Formerly bass player J. Kuusisto also was a member of Black Rock, but that isn’t the case anymore. When Black Rock plays live nowadays Misha Heikurinen takes care of the bass-parts. After their formation in 2013 Black Rock released a self-titled demo, which two years later was followed by full-length debut The Mighty Sacrifice. In 2016 a split with fellow Finnish band Necrocosmos as well as a second full-length album, titled Return Through Ages, followed. This latest album also got a successor last August. This successor is called Arcane Remorseless and recently it also got a CD-release. Arcane Remorseless really pounds very heavily, while the production isn’t that good. On the other hand this also gives it a somewhat more underground vibe, which fits quite well with the music Black Rock plays on Arcane Remorseless. Do you think lo-fi productions have their charms and you like pounding drums, crunchy guitars and dark vocals? Then maybe this Arcane Remorseless by the Finnish Black Rock is something for you! You can listen to it below.

Extinction Remains

The Brazilian Extinction Remains exists since 2013 and since that time they are very heavily crushing with their crusty death/doom metal which also contains some punk-influences. Extinction Remains’ current line-up consists of vocalist/bass player Arthur Alves, guitarists Artur Figueredo and Caio Lemos and drummer Mateus Nygrom. In their forming year these Brazilians also released their demo titled Ecologic Noise. Three years later it was followed by an EP titled Genetics of Defeat. One year after this first EP, Extinction Remains came with a second EP, titled Human Disaster Never Ending. Recently Extinction Remains released Smog. Despite this being a new release, Smog doesn’t contain any new material. Smog contains all songs of Ecologic Noise, Genetics of Defeat and Human Disaster Never Ending, but now all on one CD. So, with Smog you can have all the material Extinction Remains released so far at once. That material is definitely something that’s worth checking out. It pounds as fuck, is extremely heavy and as raw as it can be. It doesn’t matter from which release the material originally is, it all sounds nice, especially when you like extremely raw and crusty metal, on a high-speed level as well as a bit slower. You can listen to Smog below.

Pandemic

In 2015 guitarist Sebastian “Sharp” Wikar formed the Polish thrash metal band Pandemic. Last September, three years after this formation, the first studio material by Pandemic was released, an EP titled Deaf Nite. Unfortunately Sebastian couldn’t experience the release of Deaf Nite, because he passed away unexpectedly on the 9th of March 2018. Pandemic’s other members, current as well as former, guitarists Marcin Konieczny and Wiktor “Nocturnitier” Łobarzewski, bass player/vocalist Gniewko “Mara” Jelski, bass player Bartłomiej Bochniak, vocalist Piotr “Satan” Drobina and drummers Kamil “Kajcik” Kaijta and Filip Worek worked hard to make it possible to record and release Pandemic’s debut Deaf Nite, as Sebastian would have wanted it. All four tracks on Deaf Nite are written by Sebastian and he also can be heard on his guitar in the title track. That Sebastian wrote four awesome old school thrash tracks is something that becomes very clear while listening to Deaf Nite. While listening to it without knowing that it is a debut EP and someone tells you it is, you probably wouldn’t believe it. Deaf Nite pounds as old school thrash used to, but also contains a refreshing vibe. This Deaf Nite by the Polish thrashers of Pandemic is surely a recommendation for everyone who digs thrash metal! You can listen to Deaf Nite below.

Aggressive Mutilator

The Swedish black metallers of Aggressive Mutilator started in 2012. Aggressive Mutilator’s current line-up consists of drummer Micael Zetterberg and guitarist/vocalist Mikael Holm. After several demos and one compilation these Swedes released their debut full-length, titled Terror, Incest and Death, in 2014. After Terror, Incest and Death again several demos as well as two compilations followed. Last year Aggressive Mutilator also released a second full-length album. This successor of Terror, Incest and Death is titled Det Djävlanästet and contains almost 18 minutes of raw, punkish black metal that rattles really hard. The production of Det Djävlanästet is quite raw and dirty, something that perfectly fits the raw and dirty style of Aggressive Mutilator’s black metal. Det Djävlanästet also contains two instrumental tracks, Bland löss och annat fanskap and  The Orb, which both are synth tracks. Sometimes synth tracks combine very well with black metal. However in my opinion it doesn’t fit that well on this album and with Aggressive Mutilator’s style of black metal. The remainder of Det Djävlanästet however does make you forget that quite soon, because what Aggressive Mutilator shows there is much more interesting: a huge bunch of very heavily battering and crushing in a way that is very dirty, raw and intense! You can listen to Det Djävlanästet below.

Concrete Funeral

Pay attention death/thrash fans! Soon a very promising debut album will be released by a Canadian band operating in this subgenre of metal. This band, consisting of guitarist/vocalist Devin Schum, guitarist Jesse Lindbeck, drummer Connor Erhart and bass player Paul Mercer, is called Concrete Funeral. Concrete Funeral’s debut album will be titled Ultimum Judicium and it will be released on May the 31st. With Ultimum Judicium Concrete Funeral delivers a debut that certainly doesn’t sound like it is a debut. Ultimum Judicium for sure does sound a lot more like a very strong album by a band that already plays on a high level for quite some time and definitely knows what it is doing. Exactly this is what makes Ultimum Judicium a very strong debut that shows what Concrete Funeral is capable of: playing some very well-done death/thrash metal that pounds nicely, but with mixing in quite some variation. Ultimum Judicium for sure promises very much for the future of Concrete Funeral. This is a band that probably could be a pretty big name in death/thrash metal within a few years. Recommended for sure! You can watch their latest video Stabbed to Death below. Do you want to win Ultimum Judicium? You can! The only thing you have to do for that is entering our Ultimum Judicium contest by filling in the form below. We will pick a winner next Friday!

Legacy of Cynthia

Pounding drums, melodic guitars, a punching bass and extremely nice sounding, heavy vocals, all mixed in a very pounding, at moments progressive-sounding combination with sometimes a few synths or keyboards added. That’s exactly what Legacy of Cynthia does and they do so in a very well-executed way. In the two years that followed after their formation in 2010, they released two EP’s, respectively Voyage and II. In 2014 their debut full-length, titled Renaissance, followed. Two years later they released its successor Danse Macabre. Renaissance as well as Danse Macabre are both most certainly worth checking out. Besides the aforementioned combination they also show quite a lot of variation within those albums. However, Danse Macabre is already three years old, which might let you wonder how Legacy of Cynthia sounds right now. It is possible to hear that now, because recently some good news came out from Legacy of Cynthia: they’re about to make another twist in their career. So, we can expect new Legacy of Cynthia songs this year! In March they already released the first one of those songs, including video, which you can check below. The song is called Monster and sounds awesome!

Zaum

In 2014 we already reviewed Zaum’s debut album Oracles, as you can read here. Since then, this band, consisting of Kyle Alexander McDonald and Christopher Lewis, also released a second and third album, respectively Himalaya to Mesopotamia (2015) and Eidolon (2016). Soon they will add a fourth album to that. This fourth album will be titled Divination and will be released via Listenable Records. Divination contains three songs with lengths varying from a bit less than 9 minutes to 18,5 minutes, which gives Divination a total length of 41 minutes. Do you like slow, upbuilding, doomy, sludgy music? Then Zaum’s mantra-doom would be great for you and you will love Divination. Are you more someone searching for something extremely fast and/or progressive? Then you can probably skip this band. Based on drums and bass, Zaum also play other, more special instruments on Divination, such as a nicely sounding sitar and a didgeridoo. These special instruments give Divination an extra oriental vibe which, combined with the hypnotic basis of drums and bass, give this album a very in-trance-bringing and ritualistic-sounding vibe. That’s something Kyle and Christopher probably also wanted to do more with when playing live, because they recently welcomed Nawal Doucette as an official member of Zaum. She takes care of Zaum’s visual performance art and ambiance. Something that almost can’t be other than fitting Zaum’s music perfectly! Below you can watch the trailer of Divination.

Bloodywood

Hollywood, Bollywood, Bloodywood.. Wait, what? Bloodywood? Yes, where Hollywood and Bollywood of course have more to do with movies, that isn’t the case with Bloodywood. Bloodywood is a very nice metal band coming from New Delhi, India. Vocalist Jayant Bhadula and Karan Katiyar, who is responsible for all music, started with Bloodywood in 2016 by creating metal versions of pop-songs such as Luis Fonsi’s Despacito and Everybody from the Backstreet Boys. Besides those they also made some metal versions of a few traditional Indian songs such as Ari Ari, which sounds really awesome. Now, Bloodywood also released three of their own, original songs, including videos, on their Youtube-channel. The latest of those three, Machi Bhasad (Expect a Riot), can be checked below. Now, rapper Raoul Kerr, who already featured on earlier Bloodywood songs, also became an official member of Bloodywood. This is an extremely awesome, very promising band that sounds very heavy, including folky elements, English raps and clean as well as brutal vocals in Punjabi. Bloodywood for sure is a band to keep track of in the future. Want to see this band live? You can! Unfortunately they aren’t playing in The Netherlands yet, but they will play different shows in Germany, for example Wacken Open Air, the UK and the Taman Festival in Russia.

Welicoruss

Recently my girlfriend got a band recommendation, a band she also recommended to me. It was the band Welicoruss, originally coming from Russia, but nowadays based in the Czech Republic. That recommendation soon proved to be very well welcome, unfortunately it was a few days after their Dutch show, but that only makes my personal hunger to a possible upcoming Dutch show of this nice symphonic black metal band even bigger. This band clearly creates its own version of symphonic black metal. The symphonic aspects are brought in a very epic way and could almost be called orchestral. They also released two of their own songs, Slava Rusi and Kharna, besides the original versions, in orchestral/classical versions. Furthermore this band, consisting of vocalist Alexey Boganov, guitarist Gojko Maric, drummer Ilya Tabachnik and bass player Tomáš Magnusek, also mixes an big dose of folk-influences into their music, something that makes everything even more epic and unique. The fact that Welicoruss’ lyrics are in their native tongue Russian, a language that fits this music very well, also of course adds to that. Below you can listen to their latest album, titled Az Esm’.

Ethereal Kingdoms

Heartchamber is the first story from the debut album of the Danish theatrical symphonic metal band Ethereal Kingdoms. It tells the story of a broken connection between two people.

However, when we have forged a bond to someone, it doesn’t break just that easily.

It grows inside our chests and we may remain in each other’s hearts for ages – sometimes for better, but often for worse. Like lost ghosts, we walk inside the chambers of each other’s hearts, even if we are the cause of each other’s misery. Despite the connection being broken, the bond is still strong through the pain and heartbreak that inevitably follows in the trail of romance. We bleed because we loved. Somehow, it is beautiful in all its destructive glory. A beautifully bittersweet glistening tale of love and loss.

The story draws on connections to the tales told in the band’s 2018 dual singles Beginnings and Endings, and the voice of the wrongdoer is embodied by Sofia Schmidt’s emotional vocals, featuring award-winning singer-songwriter Amalie Skriver on backing vocals.

Herod

On Tuesday March the 26th I went to Het Paard in Den Haag to interview Downfall of Gaia, you can read that interview here. That evening, Downfall of Gaia was the second of three bands to enter the stage. The Ocean Collective was headlining and the Swiss band Herod was the opening band. I already knew The Ocean Collective and Downfall of Gaia a bit more than Herod before I went to that show. I once listened both albums by this band, consisting of Mike Pilat, Pierre Carroz, Bertrand Pot and Fabien Vodoz, but that was all. However, that wasn’t because of the quality of both albums, because both 2014-debut They Were None as well as the recently released Sombre Dessein are both very strong albums that really crush as hell. Both are definitely very much recommended when you dig heavier progressive metal. While both albums already crush quite a bit, when playing live Herod crushes even more. Right from the first moments Herod put on a very strong, extremely pounding show that pulverizes the audience. A phenomenal show that surely is worth to experience. Below you can check Herod’s video for the track called Fork Tongue, coming off Sombre Dessein.

Circle Creek

Already 36 years ago, in 1983, the Austrian band Circle Creek was formed by twin brothers Chris (lead guitar, vocals) and Didier Zirkelbach (rhythm guitar, vocals). Besides Chris and Didier, Circle Creek’s current line-up also consists of Bernado Beat (drums, vocals) and Gorge P. (bass, vocals). On October the 5th last year Circle Creek released Past Presents Future via NRT-Records. They released it because of their 35th anniversary and as a teaser for their upcoming album called The World Is On Fire. On Past Presents Future, Circle Creek shows different sides of themselves. Some tracks are a bit heavier than others, but Circle Creek constantly shows a bit of a raw edge in their music. However, don’t expect extreme metal or something like that, it surely doesn’t get that heavy. The music Circle Creek delivers is more towards heavy/stoner metal and hardrock, but whatever you want to call it, it is definitely worth checking out! Below you can watch their lyric video for the 2018 version of their track called Going Nowhere.

A Fool’s Errand

The next band, A Fool’s Errand, is from The Netherlands, Den Bosch to be a bit more precisely. A Fool’s Errand, consisting of bass player/trumpet player Alwin van der Ven, drummer Albert Schuurmans and guitarists Fabian Voskuil and Willem Schuurmans, makes post rock that mostly is instrumental. However, A Fool’s Errand’s post rock surely is very varied, including excesses that can be towards the jazzy side as well as the heavy side. In December 2017 this band released their debut EP, titled Asfaltpuin | Foxboy, which recently got a successor with debut full-length Gravitas. On Gravitas we, for example, hear quite heavy guitars and drums during Deer, which is followed by Icarus with quite a jazzy part, also due to the added vocals by Sarah Cahuasqui. However, later on Icarus we again hear the versatility of A Fool’s Errand with heavier parts and a combination of the two different styles. With Gravitas, which you can listen to below, A Fool’s Errand delivers a very varied, interesting post rock album that surely is recommended to this genre’s fans.

Pectora

Collide is the new single by the Danish heavy metallers Pectora. It’s a real fast and thrashy heavy metal anthem for all the true headbangers out there ready to get their head blown off when titans and giants collide! Collide is taken from the upcoming album Untaken. Untaken is mixed and mastered by German star producer Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann (Orden Ogan, Rhapsody of Fire, Riot V). In May Pectora will tour Sweden as support for the US metallers Them. Besides that they are also going to play some shows in Denmark and Germany. Untaken will be released on CD, LP as well as digitally through Mighty Music on May the 3rd. Dominanz

Code of Silence is the new video from the Norwegian black metallers Dominanz. Code of Silence is taken from their third album, titled Let The Death Enter, which was released on March the 22nd through Mighty Music. The record was captured in Øystein G. Bruns’ (Borknagar) Crosound Studio, with the final touch being made by mastermind Dan Swanö at Unisound Studio. Code Of Silence is a lyric video illustrated by live footage. The band comments on the single: “Code of Silence was the very first track we wrote for the album, five years ago. We would like to thank the Catholic Church for their inspiration for this one, and especially Australian “Father Jim”!” DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive BeNeLux-premiere of Code of Silence‘s video, which was filmed and edited by Jekabs Vilkarsis, below.

BrightDelight

Do you like pounding breakdowns mixed with electronic sounds? Then BrightDelight might be your next favorite band! This Russian band formed in 2017 and released their debut album Let’s Make It Real in that same year. On March the 23rd this debut album got a successor. This successor, titled Invoke, was released via Sliptrick Records. Pounding breakdowns and catchy electronics are the basis of BrightDelight’s music on Invoke. Vocally catchy clean vocals as well as brutal vocals can be heard. The music of Aleksandr Arikhipkin, Aleksandr Telganov (both vocals), Denis Kirsanov (bass), Stanislav Nikitashin (drums) and Mikhail Fogel (guitar) surely contains much electronics, but these surely are an addition to Invoke. This is an album that sounds pretty catchy, but also contains a big dose of power. Below you can listen to Checkmate, in which all these aspects can be heard very well.

Hedonihil

Earlier this year three members of Swallow The Sun, Juuso Raatikainen, Mikko Kotamäki and Juho Räihä, formed a new band, Hedonihil. On April the 12th this death metal band will unleash their debut album, titled I, via Inverse Records. The death metal Hedonihil shows on I is very pummelling and sounds almost black metal-like at some moments. This is especially due to the very intense screams. I is played very fast-paced. This however doesn’t mean that it’s only about playing as fast and brutal as possible. Hedonihil adds enough variation to I to keep it very interesting during the entire album. Do you want a moment of rest in the music you listen to? Then this isn’t recommended for you, but other than that it’s very recommended for sure. Earlier Hedonihil already released their first single of the album, titled The Hedonist Anthem. Now they have released a second single. It’s called Anti-Human Agenda (Misanthropy Pt. 1) and can be listened to below.

Beaten to Death

Melodic grindcore, does that even exist? Hell yes it does! It’s exactly the music Beaten to Death plays. This Norwegian band, of which the current line-up consists of vocalist Anders, guitarists Martin and Tommy, bass guitarist Mika and drummer Christian “Bartender”, already delivers this unique melodic way of this crushing genre called grindcore for nine years. One year after their formation in 2010 they released their debut album titled Xes and Strokes. Later it was followed by Dødsfest! (2013) and Unplugged (2015). In December 2018 Beaten To Death released their fourth album titled Agronomicon. Slamming drums, a very thick bass-sound and extremely heavy guitars, all with a very crushing sound and in an up-speed tempo. However they definitely play their grindcore in a melodic way, it regularly contains a fairly big dose of melody to be honest, which even makes it sound a bit catchy at some moments. To give you a few examples, be sure to check out Dere Er Herved Opplost and Extremely Run To The Hills. Besides the instrumental part of Beaten To Death’s music, Anders’ vocals are also very nicely done and contain quite a bit of variation. He shows enormously deep grunts, but he also delivers screams and filthy, intense shouts on Agronomicon. A nice, extremely up-speed, raging album from a grindcore band that can be called quite unique! You can listen to Agronomicon below!

Stevie D feat. Corey Glover

Stevie D feat. Corey Glover, a musical partnership by producer and multi-instrumentalist Stephen DeAcutis aka Stevie D and legendary singer Corey Glover (Living Colour), will release their first album, titled Torn From The Pages, in May worldwide through Mighty Music. Now they released the first single off this debut album. It’s titled Final Resting Place and it is a great rock song. It is not as heavy as most music we write about on DutchMetalManiac, but it certainly is a song that sounds very nice and might be to your liking too. Stevie D. has  the following comment about the song: “Final Resting Place is about facing and overcoming life’s inevitable adversities. It’s also about living your dharma. It’s a righteous track.” DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive Dutch premiere of Final Resting Place‘s video below.

Seven Thorns

In December 2018 the Danish power metallers of Seven Thorns released their third album, titled Symphony of Shadows. Especially the powerful drums and the tight, heavy riffs are standing out on Symphony of Shadows. Besides that Seven Thorns, consisting of vocalist Björn Asking, guitarist Gabriel Tuxen, keyboard player Asger W. Nielsen, bass player Mads Mølbæk and drummer Lars Borup, surely thought out some nicely worked out details on Symphony of Shadows, like for example the keyboard solo in the title-track, the female vocals in that same track as well as in Beneath a Crescent Moon and the ritualistic and dark sounding part in Ethereal (I’m Still Possessed), which also  includes very nice drums and is followed by one of the nice guitar solos on this album. Today Seven Thorns releases its video for the title-track of Symphony of Shadows and DutchMetalManiac is proud to give you the exclusive Dutch premiere of it below. Seven Thorns’ bass player Mads Mølbæk has the following comment about the video: “The fear of, and the fascination with, destruction reside simultaneously in most of us. The vampire myth gives a face to the thrill of stepping close to the edge, of losing control and of our secret wish that our end will turn out a new beginning. The treacherous voice in our heads, leading us astray, bringing us into the danger zone, how come it sounds so sweet? Like music. From the shadows come the siren call for self-ruin.”
